Why Katakana Feels Harder
Katakana has the same 46 sounds as hiragana, but you meet it less often, the shapes are straighter and more alike, and the words it spells are foreign words you have to decode: コーヒー is coffee, ホテル is hotel. Most learners can read hiragana in a week and still stumble on katakana months later.
The Pairs People Confuse Most
- シ ツshi: dots stacked on the left, last stroke sweeps up. tsu: dots across the top, last stroke drops down
- ソ ンso: the short stroke is upright. n: the short stroke lies flat
- ノ メme has one more stroke
- ク ワ ケ タku is open, wa is closed, ke and ta add a stroke
- ル レru ends with a hook, re does not
The Long Vowel Mark ー
ー repeats the vowel before it. カー is kaa, キー is kii. Kanaria shows the romaji as typed, koohii, never with a macron.
Stroke Direction Tips
Four look-alikes are written in the same direction as their hiragana twins. Each stroke starts lower than the last, or further right.

How long does it take to learn katakana?
Recognition takes about a week at 10 minutes a day. Reading loanwords quickly takes longer, because decoding アイスクリーム into ice cream is a separate skill. Kanaria practises it with five loanword packs, dictation and minimal pairs.
