Questions and Answers
Short, honest answers about price, privacy, learning and devices. If yours is not here, write to support and a person answers.
Price and Pro
Is Kanaria free?
Yes. All 230 kana, lessons, reviews, writing, look-alike practice, the mastery grid and the widgets are free, with no ads. Pro adds unlimited reading practice, all five loanword packs, dictation and minimal pairs, speed stats with history and the coming-reviews forecast, and custom lists.
Is it a subscription?
No. Pro is one purchase. It is never taken away, and Restore Purchase brings it back on a new phone. There is no trial that turns into a payment and nothing to cancel.
How do I restore my purchase?
In the app, open Settings, then About, then Restore Purchase, with the Apple Account that bought Pro. When you reinstall Kanaria, it also checks for Pro by itself the first time it opens.
What is the Supporter option?
Supporter is the same Pro for US$19.99 instead of US$9.99, with a small Supporter mark in Settings, About. It unlocks nothing extra. It is for people who want to pay more, and the money helps build the next app, for kanji.
Can I get a refund?
Apple handles refunds at reportaproblem.apple.com. We cannot issue them ourselves, but write to support if something is wrong and we will help.
Privacy and Data
What data do you collect?
None about you. The app has no account, no analytics, no ads SDK and no tracking. To unlock Pro, Apple handles the payment and RevenueCat confirms it with a random ID made on your device, not linked to your name or email. Your progress stays on your device and in your own iCloud or phone backup.
How do I move my progress to a new phone?
Your phone backup carries everything. You can also export a file in Settings and import it on the new device. iOS and Android use the same file.
Does it work offline? Do I need an account?
It works fully offline, and there is no account. Your progress stays on your device and in your own phone backup.
Learning
Do I have to write by hand?
No. Writing is on by default because it helps you remember, but you can answer on the flick pad or by typing instead, and turn writing off in Settings. A finger is enough; Apple Pencil works on iPad.
Which romaji spelling is accepted?
Any common spelling: shi or si, chi or ti, tsu or tu, fu or hu. Long vowels are typed as they are written in kana, like ookii and kouen. The app never asks for macrons.
How long does it take?
Most people can read all 46 hiragana after 3 to 7 days of 10 minutes a day, and katakana in about another week. Reading real words without sounding them out takes a few weeks of daily practice.
Devices
Android? iPad? Mac?
iPhone and iPad now. Android is being built next, with the same content and the same export file. A Mac version is planned after that.
Is Family Sharing on?
No. Pro is a one-time purchase for one Apple Account, and Family Sharing is off.
